The juices of Villagers’ debut album are being squeezed to the last now with what seems like their zillionth single release, which is quite something, for a record with only eleven songs. Tiding over the void between first a second records and promoting the album further in time for their upcoming festival shows, band leader Conor O’Brien presents another slice of folky goodness with his troupe’s new single.

This time it’s an elaborate tale of teacher/pupil dichotomy and a game of "# follow the leader #". Bouncier and sprightlier than the more sinister ‘Becoming a Jackal’, their last (re)release, ‘The Pact’ is a whimsical, plaintive folk ditty based around five verses of acoustic strumming, fun bass line, doubled up vocals an octave apart and some simple additional piano toward the end. Lyrically the master whose ‘# past was taken by thieves #’ is showing our narrator the path to some kind of enlightenment while he preys on her like an affliction. Deep stuff but it all rolls along somewhat happily. Try and catch them this summer.
