Slight Return

Casiokids - Det Haster! (Moshi Moshi Records)
October 24, 2011
4.3/6.0

Every time that Casiokids' comeback track 'Det Haster!' runs the risk of becoming too pedestrian, something new and unexpected appears to grab your attention. On the surface, it may seem like a simple, ambient number, but listen really carefully and you'll pick out all sorts of unusual noises beyond those filters and synths.

The musical buried treasure on offer spans from a squelchy bassline to a flourish of strings. However, when regimental woodblock and a woozy synth duet completely change the tone in the outro, the band finally strike the jackpot. All that waiting around for something to happen is worth it in the end. As an added bonus, Of Montreal slice and dice the source material to turn the track into a beastly floorfiller that runs the risk of outshining its A-side, particularly when a Hammer Horror-esque organ creeps in at the end. A muted return, but a welcome one.
